Selva Verde Lodge, Costa Rica
"Selva Verde Lodge in the Saripiqui region of Costa Rica is one of the best places in the world to view both Sunbittern and Great Green Macaws. The surrounding forest makes not only for excellent birding, but also for excellent exploring. Poison Dart Frogs, various reptiles and butterflies abound and the resident guides are really helpful and informative."

Tropical birding

"I love this show. I DVR every episode. I especially enjoy the ones that I may never get a chance to see. It gives me an opportunity to "travel" and see and learn things that I could never do on my own. My 3 year old daughter watches the show with me and I am trying to have her learn about birds and nature, so we love the show. Thanks so much for bringing birding to mass audiences." Susan, Utah

"This is a serious show for those who enjoy adventure, all around the world. I am still in my PJ's while I eat my breakfast and travel with James on "Birding Adventures" that truly take my breath away. I have already created a dream list of places to visit inspired by your shows. Even if you are not a birder-"Birding Adventures" is for you! Between canopying in Costa Rica, or air-boating in Texas, I feel inspired every weekend. Love you guys, thanks!" Hannah, Georgia

Welcome to our September edition of the Nikon's BATV newsletter!

We are busy filming Season 4 and have just returned from a most successful trip to Corpus Christi and Rockport-Fulton in Texas. We were down there to cover the birds of the area but, more importantly, we focused on the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds of Rockport-Fulton and the incredible HawkWatch platform at Hazel Bazemore in Corpus Christi.

The fascinating thing about the hummingbird migration is not so much the birds (and there are swarms of them!) but the fact that a single bird species has inspired so many locals. Almost every restaurant, home, hotel, shop etc has at least one hummingbird feeder. At one particular home we must have had over 1,000 hummingbirds at any one time!

Filming Jamaican Owls

Jamaican Owls are amongst the most sought-after of birds in Jamaica. They are pretty unique owls and, for this reason, are placed in their own genus, pseudoscops.  Although widespread across the island, one of the best places to see the birds reliably is Hotel Mockingbird Hill. During our first night at the hotel we did not search for the owl as we arrived late, tired from a long day filming Crested Quail-dove, arguably the hardest of all the 28 endemic birds to find. But I remember hearing the owl in my sleep. And when you hear the distinctive call of this bird, it will certainly wake you up! Energized by this auditory evidence, we set out from the hotel the next evening and immediately heard two owls vocalizing...

After spending the evening with two adult Jamaican Owls, we headed off to our next destination in the Blue Mountains, Forres Park Resort and Spa. This lodge is an excellent base from which to explore the Blue Mountains and hike to the summit of the mountains at 7,400 feet. Ring-tailed Pigeons can be found in the area, along with Rufous-throated Solitaire and all the high altitude endemics of Jamaica.

But what we didn't expect to find at this altitude was Jamaican Owl and whilst eating dinner we heard this weird, repetitive pleading call. It sounded like a young bird begging for its parents and that's exactly what our search revealed, a juvenile Jamaican Owl!
